Mud Control
With winters becoming increasingly wet, managing mud around your equestrian or agricultural facility is more important than ever. Excess mud not only creates safety hazards but also increases wear on gateways, walkways, and turnout areas. At MBE Group, we offer a range of effective solutions to help you control mud build-up — including hardstanding surfaces, reinforced gateways, drainage systems, and all-weather turnout pens. Whether you're looking to improve access, protect your paddocks, or create cleaner, safer working areas, our team can tailor a mud-control solution to suit your site and your horses' needs.

Surface Types
Selecting the correct surface type is crucial to ensuring your arena, gallop, turnout pen, or lunge pen performs safely, effectively, and all year round. At MBE Group, we offer a wide range of high-quality surface options — including silica sand, fibre mixes, carpet fibre, and rubber — each tailored to different disciplines, ground conditions, and budgets. Our expert team will guide you through the selection process to ensure the surface you choose delivers the right balance of grip, cushioning, and durability for your specific needs.

Aggregate
Aggregate is a practical and cost-effective material widely used for equestrian walkways, access routes, and yard paths. When installed over a properly prepared and compacted base with a geotextile membrane, aggregate provides a stable, free-draining surface that helps prevent mud build-up and improves year-round accessibility.
Pros:
-
Excellent drainage – reduces standing water and mud
-
Cost-effective – ideal for large areas or long runs
-
Low maintenance – easily topped up or re-levelled
-
Natural appearance – blends well with rural surroundings
-
Quick installation – minimal disruption during works
Cons:
-
Loose underfoot – may shift or scatter without edging
-
Not ideal for fast work – better suited for walking, not trotting or cantering
-
Requires occasional topping – especially in high-traffic areas
-
May trap bedding or debris – depending on location and usage

Concrete
Concrete is a highly durable and low-maintenance option for equestrian walkways, particularly in high-traffic areas such as stable yards, wash bays, access routes, and feeding zones. When properly laid with the correct sub-base, finish, and drainage considerations, concrete offers a long-term solution that stands up to daily use, weather exposure, and heavy loads.
Pros:
-
Extremely durable – resists wear from hooves, vehicles, and equipment
-
Low maintenance – easy to clean and long-lasting
-
Non-slip finishes available – safer for horses and handlers
-
Stable footing – ideal for heavy or high-traffic areas
-
Professional appearance – clean, tidy, and well-defined pathways
Cons:
-
Higher upfront cost – more expensive than aggregate or loose surfaces
-
Hard underfoot – offers no cushioning, not suitable for free movement/exercise
-
Permanent installation – limited flexibility if changes are needed later
-
Can become slippery – if not finished or maintained properly

Rubber Mats
Rubber interlocking mats are a flexible, safe, and user-friendly surface option for equestrian walkways, wash bays, stable entrances, and grooming areas. These mats create a cushioned, non-slip surface that enhances comfort for horses while improving safety and hygiene. Installed over a solid, level base, they offer a practical solution for yards looking to reduce mud, noise, and surface wear.
Pros:
-
Non-slip surface – ideal for wet areas and improving handler safety
-
Shock-absorbing – gentle on joints, great for rehabilitation or senior horses
-
Modular & movable – can be repositioned or replaced if needed
-
Quick installation – minimal groundwork required in some cases
-
Easy to clean – suitable for pressure washing or sweeping
Cons:
-
Higher material cost – compared to loose or aggregate surfaces
-
Requires level sub-base – best performance on concrete or compacted surfaces
-
May lift or shift – if not properly fitted or maintained
-
Can retain moisture – needs proper drainage underneath to prevent buildup
At MBE Group, we offer high-quality, heavy-duty interlocking mats specifically designed for equestrian use, and we ensure proper ground preparation to maximise longevity, safety, and performance.
