Aggregate

When installed over a properly prepared and compacted base with a geotextile membrane, aggregate provides a stable, free-draining surface that helps prevent mud build-up and improves year-round accessibility.

Pros:

Excellent drainage – reduces standing water and mud
Cost-effective – ideal for large areas or long runs
Low maintenance – easily topped up or re-levelled
Natural appearance – blends well with rural surroundings
Quick installation – minimal disruption during works

Cons:

Loose underfoot – may shift or scatter without edging
Not ideal for fast work – better suited for walking, not trotting or cantering
Requires occasional topping – especially in high-traffic areas
May trap bedding or debris – depending on location and usage

Concrete
