Design & Install

At MBE Group, we offer a specialist design service for equine turnout pens, ensuring every pen is tailored to suit your land, layout, and horses’ needs. Whether you require a single pen for restricted turnout or a series of interconnected pens for larger facilities, our team will assess ground conditions, drainage requirements, surface options, and fencing preferences to create a functional, durable, and welfare-focused design. Using 3D visuals and expert planning, we ensure optimal positioning, safety, and year-round usability — providing you with a clear vision and a dependable solution from concept to completion.

Our Process

  • Every successful turnout pen starts with a thorough consultation. At MBE Group, we take the time to understand your land, your horses’ needs, and how you intend to use the space—whether for daily turnout, rehabilitation, or restricted grazing. During the consultation, our team will assess site access, ground conditions, drainage requirements, surface options, and fencing preferences. We’ll then provide tailored recommendations and, if needed, detailed 3D designs to help you visualise the final layout. Our goal is to ensure your turnout pen is safe, durable, and perfectly suited for all-year-round use.

  • Detailed estimates and formal quotations to help you plan your project with confidence. Initial estimates provide a rough guide based on your requirements, helping you understand potential costs and options. Once a site visit or detailed design brief has been completed, we’ll provide a formal quotation outlining all materials, labour, and timescales involved. Every quotation is transparent, with no hidden fees, and tailored specifically to your project — so you know exactly what to expect before any work begins.

  • We offer a complete design and planning service for equine turnout pens. Our team will assess your site, layout requirements, and intended use to create a tailored design that maximises both functionality and space. If planning permission is required, we can assist with the process — from supplying scaled drawings and material specifications to liaising with local planning authorities where needed. Whether you're installing a single pen or a full turnout system, we’ll ensure your project meets all necessary regulations while delivering a safe, practical, and well-integrated solution.

  • To secure your booking, a deposit will be required — the amount and terms will be clearly outlined in your quotation. Once the deposit is received, we’ll issue all necessary documents for review and signing, including your project agreement, design details, and terms of service. With paperwork completed, we’ll confirm your official start date and keep you updated on scheduling, delivery timelines, and any preparation required in advance. This structured process ensures clarity, commitment, and a smooth project rollout from day one.

  • On the agreed start date, our team will arrive and begin the full installation of your turnout pens. All materials, machinery, and equipment will be organised in advance to ensure a smooth and efficient start to the project. We begin by preparing the ground — marking out the area, carrying out any required excavation, and installing drainage membranes and sub-base materials. Once the foundations are complete, we’ll lay your chosen surface (such as aggregate, concrete, or rubber) and install high-quality fencing and gates to create a secure, durable turnout space.

  • Once the turnout pen installation is complete, a member of our team will walk you through the finished work to ensure every aspect meets your expectations. We’ll carry out a final inspection with you on-site, checking the surface, fencing, drainage, and overall finish to confirm the project has been delivered to the agreed specification. Only once you are fully satisfied with the result will we request the final payment.

Planning

How Can We Help

At MBE Group, we understand that navigating planning permission can be a daunting process — which is why we’re here to help every step of the way. From the outset, our experienced team can advise you on whether planning permission is likely to be required for your project. We can prepare detailed site layouts, scaled drawings, material specifications, and supporting documentation to assist with your planning application. If needed, we can also liaise directly with local planning authorities on your behalf to streamline the process and minimise delays.

SURFACES

Carpet Fibre

Carpet fibre is a popular choice for all-weather turnout pens thanks to its durability, cushioning properties, and excellent drainage capabilities. When installed correctly, it provides a soft, stable surface that reduces mud, prevents slipping, and supports joint health — making it ideal for horses in regular turnout or rehabilitation.

Rubber

Rubber is a highly effective surface option for turnout pens, offering exceptional grip, shock absorption, and durability. Ideal for high-traffic areas or horses requiring extra joint support, rubber provides a cushioned, non-slip surface that remains safe and usable in all weather conditions.

Silica Sand

Silica sand is a clean, free-draining surface option often used in turnout pens, especially when a softer, more natural footing is preferred. Its fine, consistent texture provides excellent cushioning underfoot while still offering enough firmness for stability and daily use.

LEGAL CHANGE FOR USE OF FIBRE SURFACES

When selecting the right fibre surface for equine arenas, understanding and adhering to legal standards are paramount. Indeed, the regulations governing arena surfaces are put in place to ensure safety, performance, and environmental responsibility. In the context of legal compliance, it’s essential to recognise that no waste carpet fibres are to be used in equine surfacing going forward, according to the latest surface regulations.

This significant change necessitates arena owners and service providers to assess and adjust their offerings to avoid the inclusion of shredded waste carpet in their products. Crucially, MBE Group use only virgin carpet within surface production, never using waste carpet products. Compliance with surface regulations is not merely a matter of choice; it’s a crucial legal requirement.

The enforcement of these rules ensures that all fibres used meet specific safety standards. For instance, non-compliance could pose risks to the welfare of the horses and riders, and when it comes to fibre surface materials, such risks are not tolerable. Hence, determining the limits of what constitutes acceptable and legal materials is essential when considering the installation or maintenance of arena surfaces.

MBE Group takes pride in offering top-of-the-line virgin fibres and surfaces that not only meet but exceed compliance requirements, ensuring that each client receives a product that is safe, durable, and in line with all current legalities.
