Why Gallops?

Gallops are a valuable addition to any equestrian training facility, providing a dedicated space for building fitness, improving stride, and developing stamina in horses. Whether for racehorses, eventers, or general performance horses, a well-constructed gallop allows for safe, controlled, and consistent exercise across all weather conditions. Unlike standard paddocks or arenas, gallops are purpose-built for forward, uninterrupted movement, reducing the risk of injury caused by uneven or muddy ground. With the right surface and drainage system, gallops can be used year-round — enhancing training routines, improving horse welfare, and adding significant value to your equestrian property.

Creating Perfection

Design Service

Designing equine gallops is not a simple task — and choosing the right company is essential to getting it right. Every element of the build must be carefully considered to create a safe, durable, and high-performance training surface. From ground conditions and foundations to drainage, aggregates, geotextile membranes, surface material, fencing, and access points — each component plays a vital role in the gallop’s long-term success. At MBE Group, we take a comprehensive approach to gallop design and construction, ensuring every detail is tailored to your horses, your land, and your training goals. With the right expertise, the result is a truly exceptional gallop that performs all year round.

Drainage

Effective drainage is one of the most critical components in the construction of a successful gallop. Without proper drainage, surfaces can quickly become waterlogged, uneven, and unsafe for training — especially during wet weather. At MBE Group, we design and install high-performance drainage systems tailored to the layout, ground conditions, and intensity of use. This includes carefully calculated gradients, drainage channels, perforated pipes, and specialist aggregates to ensure fast water movement away from the surface.

Foundations

A gallop is only as good as the ground it’s built on — which is why strong, well-prepared foundations are essential for long-term performance and durability. At MBE Group, we begin every gallop installation with a full site assessment to understand ground conditions, levels, and water flow. We then construct a carefully engineered foundation that includes excavation to the correct depth, installation of a high-quality geotextile membrane, and layering of compacted MOT type 1 or other specialist aggregates. This stable sub-base supports drainage, prevents surface movement, and provides the structural integrity needed for consistent, all-weather use.

Surface

The surface is the final and most important layer of your gallop — directly impacting performance, safety, and longevity. At MBE Group, we offer a range of high-quality surface materials tailored to your discipline, usage frequency, and budget. Popular options include fibre-sand blends, waxed surfaces, and carpet fibre, each providing excellent cushioning, grip, and consistency. The right surface helps reduce concussion on joints, minimises tracking, and supports confident, balanced movement at speed. Our team ensures all surfaces are installed at the correct depth over a properly prepared base and drainage system, delivering an all-weather gallop that performs reliably year-round.

Do I Need Planning?

In many cases, yes — gallops do require planning permission, particularly if they involve significant groundwork, permanent surfacing, excavation, or alterations to the landscape. Factors such as location (e.g. green belt, AONB, or agricultural land), drainage impact, access, and intended use (private vs. commercial) will all influence whether permission is needed. At MBE Group, we can advise you from the outset and, if required, assist with the full planning process — including site drawings, technical specifications, and liaison with local authorities. Our goal is to ensure your gallop is fully compliant, built to regulation, and ready for safe, long-term use.

Surface

Most Common Surfaces

01

Silica Sand

Silica sand is a popular and proven surface choice for equestrian gallops, offering excellent stability, drainage, and consistency underfoot. Its angular particle shape provides natural grip and reduces rolling, while its fine texture supports even compaction and reliable going across the entire track. When installed over a properly prepared foundation with integrated drainage, silica sand allows for year-round use with minimal maintenance. It’s suitable as a standalone surface or as a base component for fibre or waxed surface blends. At MBE Group, we source high-quality equestrian-grade silica sand and install it to the correct depth and specification, ensuring safe, long-lasting performance for both flat and incline gallops.

02

Fibre Mix

A fibre mix surface is a premium choice for equestrian gallops, combining the stability of high-grade silica sand with the structure and resilience of synthetic fibres. This blend mimics the feel of natural turf, offering superior cushioning, consistent going, and reduced surface movement — ideal for high-intensity training and long-distance work. The added fibres help bind the sand particles, improving moisture retention, reducing dust, and enhancing shock absorption, which protects joints and reduces fatigue in horses. At MBE Group, we install fibre mix surfaces with expert precision over a fully engineered base and drainage system, ensuring optimal performance, longevity, and all-weather usability for professional gallops.
